On January 13, 1984, the 11th anniversary of the Roe v. Wade decisions, President Ronald Reagan issued a proclamation designating January 22nd as the first National Sanctity of Human Life Sunday, noting it was the 11th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court ruling that legalized abortion in all 50 states. We now recognize each January as Sanctity of Human Life Month and encourage churches in our community to commit to observing the sanctity of human life while praying for our state, nation and the pro-life movement.
Why is SOHLs Month important?
Despite the repeal of Roe v Wade, abortions have actually increased in the state of Maryland in recent years. Our state is one of only 6 in this country where a woman can abort her baby throughout all nine months of pregnancy. Third trimester abortions are more common than most people are aware-Maryland is what is known as an “Abortion Tourism” destination. Women come here from states as far away as Texas to easily obtain an abortion in the last months of pregnancy. This barbaric procedure is legal and protected here.Additionally, the abortion pill, or chemical abortion, now counts for an estimated 60% of all abortions, is available by mail with no doctor’s oversight. Women are being deceived by cleverly worded marketing to abort their babies in what is often called a “DIY” abortion.
But God…
We know that each and every human life is “fearfully and wonderfully made”, a unique individual of great worth made in the image of our Creator God. As His people, we must pray and advocate for these tiny image bearers, providing support and encouragement to women who may consider abortion their only option. We need to reach these women and offer them a cool cup of water in Jesus’ name.
