Life can be overwhelming, even for women who seem to have everything in place—a good marriage, healthy children, and a stable home. In fact, almost 20% of the women who walk through our doors are married or engaged. Even so, sometimes the pressure to hold everything together becomes so heavy that even a loving mother can feel trapped. That’s exactly where Alyssa found herself when she walked into our clinic.
Alyssa, a mother of four, was happily married, working outside the home, and leading a busy but full life. When she found out she was pregnant, instead of joy, she was filled with dismay. How could she add another baby to everything else she had to do?
Alyssa felt completely overwhelmed. As she unburdened her cares to the Clinic’s volunteer counselor, she cried and described how lost she felt and how little support she had in making this significant decision.
She felt that abortion was her only option.
As she and her counselor talked, Alyssa admitted that she knew her entire family would be against an abortion. Furthermore, she herself knew that abortion would be wrong. How could she choose life for one child over another?
During the sonogram, Alyssa stared intently at the screen as her baby’s heartbeat sounded steadily through the room. When she left the clinic, she still hadn’t voiced a decision. We immediately put her on our staff and volunteer prayer list.
But the next day, her text came through: “[The baby] already had a heartbeat… I just needed to see the baby to seal the deal.” Alyssa’s counselor was overjoyed — Alyssa had chosen life for her child!
Alyssa went on to reflect that the warm environment of the clinic affected her. She said, “they incorporate God without judgment.”
Alyssa’s decision didn’t erase her challenges, but it transformed her heart. In that quiet sono room, with the steady beat of new life echoing around her, she rediscovered her own strength and the quiet hope God had planted there all along.
Alyssa’s courage is a powerful testimony to why this Ministry exists: to meet each woman in her hardest moments and remind her that God sees her, sustains her, and gives her hope.
